The Thenardiers have been so degraded by poverty that they will do everything it takes so that when Jean Valjean comes to their home which looks terrible they will receive more money out of pity from Jean Valjean. The Thenardiers would even risk the chance that Jean Valjean wouldnt come and they were already tearing the house up. "You unbottom the chair"(Hugo 208). Another thing is that the whole family didnt even mind the fact that the daughter got a cut from breaking the glass, they just saw this as another chance to get more money from Jean Valjean. These actions were made from the family becuase they were so greedy that they wanted to pay for rent but they didnt want to work, they wanted everything to be done for them.
