Victor Hugo created the Thenardiers to help convey both themes the ruin of women by starvation which is both mentally and physically and also the degredation of men by poverty. The Thenardier are such a great example of the degredation of men by poverty, this family would do everything they could do to get easy money. This is the part where the ruin of women by starvation comes in. They both mentally and physically abused Cosette their adopted child just for money. "There is a castle on a cloud, I like to go there in my sleep, Aren't any floors for me to sweep"(castle on a cloud). Fantine was sending them money but they never gave it to Cosette. She was treated worst than an animal in this house, her food would be under the table and sometimes she would even sleep outside. Without the Thenardiers there would have never been other themes portrayed in the book. B
ut it was specially The degredation of men by poverty which they portray in the book. They would do anything it would take to recieve money. They would fake injuries and tear up their house in order to receive more money.
